Hoisting the Spi

The Traveller

Need for sail twist to assure constant angel of incidence of wind (winds aloft are stronger than winds at sea level). When boom is released it lifts and changes angle of incidence on top part of sale. Important: reduce the rudder drag by creating a support by trimming

Basics Drag & Lift/ Stalling

Lift pushes the boat forward and drag slows the VMG. Lift is "caused" by the curvature of the sail. Part of the lift moves the boat forward and the rest causes the healing the boat

Boom Jack or Boom wang

Avoids spilling the wind from the top of the sale

Changes the angle of incidence. Pooling will move the draft forward (more forgiving but less upwind due higher angle of incidence)

Using traveller to steer

Making the rudder more neutral by playing with the main sail travller

Outhaul

controls draft of lower 1/3 of the main sail.

In Light wind: release as much as possible;
Moderate wind: half draft
High winds: pulled as much as possible
Very light: not too loose (creates drag).

Create marks on boom

Head Sail

The larger the number the smaller the sail. Genoa is a type of large head sail. #1: 155% to 180% # 2: 125% to 140%

Backstay

Fractional rig allows to create more camber on the main sail. If there is too much lift, the boat will hill too much. Push the backstay to get the boat straighten up.
